How to Make a Princess Dress From a Prom Dress

Transforming an old prom dress into a princess dress for a costume or for another event is a wonderful way to revitalize the old prom dress and give it a new look. A puffy dress works best for a princess dress, but any full-skirted prom dress will work.

Cut a 3-yard piece of tulle and lay it on a table.

• Hand sew a basting stitch 1/2 inch from the top edge along the length of the tulle.

• Pull the thread gently, gathering the tulle. Gather it to the same measurement as the waistline of the prom dress.

• Sew the side seams together using a running stitch. If there is a zipper that extends below the waistline, leave the tulle unsewn at the side seam for the length of the zipper.

• Put the tulle layer of fabric over the prom dress, matching the line of stitching on the tulle with the waist of the prom dress. If there is a zipper, match the side seam of the tulle to be on the zipper.

• Use the threaded needle to sew a running stitch 1/8-inch above the basting stitch, sewing the tulle layer to the prom dress. If there is a zipper, sew the tulle along the open bit of side seam on either side of the zipper.

• Cut a piece of tulle 12 inches long by 20 inches wide.

• Repeat steps 2 and 3 for the width of the piece of tulle, gathering it to fit into the left armhole of the dress.

• Sew the side seams together using a running stitch.

• Sew the sleeve into the left armhole of the prom dress using a running stitch.
